How it works
Pure silver itself (Ag or Ag0) is inactive and cannot kill bacteria. For it to become actively antimicrobial or to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi, silver must lose an electron and become a positively charged silver ion (Ag+). To achieve this, the silver needs to be in contact with either air or liquids like wound exudate or breast milk.
Silver ions are highly reactive and attack microbial cells in multiple ways. They bind to and disrupt microbial cell membranes. They enter cells and interfere with proteins, energy production, enzyme function, and cell replication. This causes microbial cell death.
How to use
Wear the nursing cups under your nursing bra. If you are using absorbent breast pads, place them over the cups, and your bra will keep everything in place.
Express a few drops of breast milk into each cup and place them directly over your nipples, securing them with your nursing bra.
Before breastfeeding, remove the cups and clean your nipples with warm water. After feeding, rinse the cups with warm water, pat them dry, and repeat the process between feeds.
Wear the cups day and night, between nursing sessions, until the pain or damage has resolved. If using them preventively, wear the cups consistently for the first 2-3 weeks, then as needed.
How to care
Over time, natural oxidation may cause the Silver Nursing Cups to develop a brass-yellow color. This is normal, and the cups remain safe and effective for both mom and baby. The discoloration occurs because the metal reacts with moisture in the air, forming a tarnish on the outer layer of the silver.
Tarnishing indicates that the item is genuine silver. To remove the tarnish, make a paste with one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and a few drops of water, rub it over the cups, rinse, and pat dry.
